To Fight Depopulation, This Sicilian Town Is Auctioning Abandoned Homes For As Low As Rs 86

Italian towns and cheap houses have a unique relationship.

A small town in Sicily is offering abandoned houses at such a low price, that a cup of coffee is more expensive, as per a TNN report.

Over the last few years, many small towns in Italy have been facing depopulation. As a result, they have been offering homes at extremely low prices which are unbelievable but true. Sicily has also joined the club.

Properties in Salemi are being put up for sale for €1 (Rs 86), because of depopulation. Reports say that locals were already finding selling these properties difficult. COVID has not helped things.

Salemi is surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. Some of the homes date back to the 1600s.

But after the 1968 Belice Valley earthquake, the town suffered and saw over 4000 residents run away.

“All buildings belong to the city council, which speeds up the sale and reduces red tape. Before launching the scheme we first had to recover the old parts of Salemi where the houses are located, upgrading infrastructures and services from roads to electric grids and sewage pipes. Now the town is ready for the next step,” Sameli's mayor, Domenico Venuti, told CNN Travel.
