In A Freak Accident, Needlefish Jumps Out Of Water & Stabs Indonesian Boy In His Neck
Friday, January 24, 2020 IST
In a terrifying incident, an Indonesian boy needed a lifesaving surgery after being impaled in the neck by a flying needlefish.
The freak accident took place when the boy named Muhammad Idul was fishing with his parents in Buton waters off the South East Sulawesi province. Suddenly a needlefish jumped out and impaled him.
He got knocked off the boat and managed to swim to the surface... with the fish’s mouth embedded inside him.
The fish's long slender snout sliced straight through the 16-year-old's neck, so much so it pierced the back of his skull.
According to Mail Online, he was taken to hospital for treatment before undergoing risky surgery to remove the fish from his neck two days later.
The delicate two-hour operation involved three surgeons and two anaesthetists.
'To remove the fish snout, one must be very careful because there is a large vessel in the neck, Professor Dr Syafri K. Arif told local news site Makassar Terkin.
Needlefish (Belonidae) are known for their distinctive long, narrow jaws filled with sharp teeth and are capable of making short jumps out of the water at up to 37mph.
