Raffia’s redux: The eco-friendly footwear is enjoying the spotlight like never before

Superimpose eco-friendly with effortless chic and you’ve got a winning combination. Raffia footwear and accessories aren’t just organic but marry style with comfort. This braided beauty offers myriad styling options — it can easily make a day-to-night transition with minor tweaks and edits. One could pair these shoes with a white tiered ruffled dress for a holiday edit or transform the look with a pair of blue or black denims and a white tee for an effortless off-duty appeal.

From ZARA’s braided flat shoes to J Crew’s multi-coloured slide sandals — it’s been seen across the board. “Raffia is a fun summer trend and my favourite way to rock it is the basket raffia bags apart from the fedoras and espadrilles. Moving away from accessories, we, as a label, have also always favoured the usage of raffia in our fringe fever collection,” says designer Ohaila Khan.

Sustainable chic
Raffia bags are no longer the season’s only must-have accessory — woven shoes are gaining high-street traction, too.

Kapil Mahtani, CEO and Founder of Tresmode says, “Sustainable has become a catch-all term to describe a better way of producing the clothes, shoes and accessories that we buy and wear. Raffia is derived from a plant, which means it is biodegradable and is a form of renewable resource. The natural fibre is a summer-perfect alternative to heavy textiles. It feels more sophisticated than canvas and provides texture as well as depth.”

Breathable and cool
Since it’s straw, it’s very breathable and cool for the hot weather. Moreover, it can be dyed in any colour and used in innovative ways. Designer Sonali Dalwani of footwear label Crimzon loves using raffia in her shoes and bag lines. “The original raffia is made of straw, so it’s expensive. But there is a synthetic version available as well which is much more economical. I have used raffia in the form of hand-embroidered flowers and designs on canvas this season on wedges, mules and block heels. It’s feminine,  flirty and makes a great summer look at a brunch or an all girls’ day out!” she says.

Exude tropical vibes
As you embark on a holiday, add a touch of raffia to your wardrobe — from crochet sleeve details to woven hemlines and a summery sundress. It makes for a perfect, feminine weekend look. Both modern and timeless, raffia conjures up thoughts of a seaside holiday and boozy brunch dates. Designer Eshaani Jayaswal quips, “Raffia skirts are vintage, youthful and more sophisticated than canvas. They promise a texture and depth to any outfit. The natural fibre makes a shift from over-the-top maximalism to minimalism.”

A closet essential
You can always make this eco-friendly material rock your own way. It can go very well with rompers, skater dresses or as basic as those comfy shorts, too. Shashank Arya, Executive Director, DAR Group on behalf of Berleigh Luxury says, “We’ve always had it as a part of Schutz (a Brazilian go-to brand), it is only a matter of time that we’re talking about it now. I feel a pair of raffia heels, flats, or mules (or all three!) should be a closet essential this season.”
