What Does Your Dog’s Sleeping Position Say About Them?

Like humans, dogs love sleeping and often have personal preferences when it comes to their ultimate position.

Many humans assume these are just comfy positions dogs take to get a good night’s sleep, but each sleeping position can actually reveal a lot about your dog.

NB. They might sleep in a variety of these positions, it often depends on their mood.

Here’s what each ‘position’ says about your dog:

Lying On Tummy Position

Many dogs choose to sleep on their tummies, in a curled-up, cosy position. Not only is this a comfortable position but it also enables them to be ready to pounce to their feet at any form of threat or opportunity for fun.

Sleeping On Side

An even more restful position is lying on their side. If your dog does this, it means they are very comfortable in their surroundings without the fear of any threats. A dog on its side is a happy dog indeed.

The ‘Superman’

One of the cutest sleeping positions is when dogs lie flat on their stomach, with their legs stretched out in front and hind legs stretched backwards. We call this the ‘super-dog‘ position. Your dog is somewhat more comfortable than the first position, but they are still ready to go at any second.

The ‘Nutshell’

This is a very popular sleeping position for dogs and is also the most defensive. It involves tucking their paws under themselves, their head into their body and their tail around their face. It isn’t a very restful sleep as they are tensing most of their body so as not to be vulnerable. It might also mean they are cold as they are trying to conserve as much body heat as possible. Pop a blanket over them.

The ‘Paws In The Air Like You Just Don’t Care’

A dog lying on its back with their legs in the air is one happy pup! This is a sign of ultimate relaxation and comfort. They haven’t a care in the world and feel confident in themselves and their environment. Maybe you’ve been giving them a belly rub before…

The ‘Stretchy’ One

Same as above, only for particularly larger dogs with longer limbs. Not only is this super comfy but it’s also a great way for them to cool down and stretch out their limbs.

Back To Back Snuggles

When a dog wants to feel close to another dog or human, they create a real bond with each other by sleeping back to back or even just simply touching. This shows great trust and loyalty to each other as they’re not only showing affection but also protecting each other.
