Throwback: When Sushmita Sen decided to withdraw from Miss India pageant because of Aishwarya Rai

Sushmita Sen and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan made India proud on the global platform as they earned recognition for India in 1994. While Aishwarya was crowned Miss World, Sushmita brought home to honour of Miss Universe and was the first Indian to win the pageant too. Interestingly, ahead of the big competition, Sushmita had almost decided to withdraw because of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

According to a news portal, Sushmita had revealed in an interview that as many as 25 girls had taken back their entry form after knowing that Aishwarya was participating. Sushmita reportedly decided to do the same, however her mother scolded her for it and asked her to give her best shot. Sushmita also stated that she was convinced she would lose the competition since Aishwarya had won most of the rounds. Eventually Sushmita was crowned Miss India and she brought home the honour of Miss Universe.

Sushmita marked her debut in Bollywood with 1996 release ‘Dastak’ and went on to feature in a whole lot of ventures, which included Tamil films too. The actress adopted Renee in 2000 and a second girl Alisah in 2010.
