Nation celebrating Kargil Vijay Diwas: This is how the 1999 Kargil War was won

As the country recalls its brave heroes on the event of Kargil Vijay Diwas.

Indian and Pakistani armed forces battled the war in May-July 1999 in the Kargil locale of Jammu and Kashmir and somewhere else along the Line of Control (LoC).

India launched 'Operation Vijay' to clear the Kargil part of invasion by the Pakistani troopers and Kashmiri activists on the Indian side of the Line of Control.

Kargil was the first broadcast war saw widely by the nation.

Here is the way the war unfurled:

1999: The war

May 4: Reports of infiltrators on statures of Kargil. Vital statures assumed control by infiltrators, say reports.

May 5-15: Army patrol sent up to review. Captain Saurabh Kalia disappears. He is purportedly tormented and slaughtered in bondage by Pakistani troops.

May 26: Indian Air Force dispatches air strikes. Flying from the Indian landing strips of Srinagar, Avantipur and Adampur, ground assault flying machine MiG-21s, MiG-23s, MiG-27s, Jaguars and the Mirage 2000 strike radical positions.

May 27: An IAF MiG-27 goes down. Pilot, who discharges and is taken a captive by Pakistan, is discharged following eight days.

May 31: Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee says it's a "war-like situation" in Kargil

June 10: Pakistan returns disfigured assemblages of six troopers, India chafed. The six bodies were those of Lt. Saurav Kalia and his men who went to Kaksar range following reports of attack by Pakistani infiltrators.

June 12: Deadlock at first emergency time meeting between remote pastors Jaswant Singh and Sartaj Aziz in Delhi. Aziz told gatecrashers must leave

June 15: US President Bill Clinton encourages the Pakistan PM to pull back troops from Kargil

June 29: Army catches two essential posts close Tiger Hill

July 4: Tiger Hill caught. Three forces - 18 Grenadiers, 2 Naga, and 8 Sikh - ambush the top with help from big guns. Nawaz Sharif meets Clinton in Washington

July 5: Sharif declares haul out of Pakistani troops from Kargil

July 11: Pakistan starts haul out

July 14: India pronounces operation Vijay a win

July 26: Kargil war arrives at an end. India reports finish ousting of Pakistani troops

The losses

The official loss of life on the Indian side was 527, while that on the Pakistani side was between around 450.

· Captain Anuj Nayyar, 17 JAT Regiment, Maha Vir Chakra, Posthumous

· Major Rajesh Singh Adhikari, 18 Grenadiers, Maha Vir Chakra, Posthumous

· Captain Haneef-u-ddin, 11 Rajputana Rifles, Vir Chakra, after death

· Major Mariappan Saravanan, 1 Bihar, Vir Chakra, Posthumous

· Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja, Indian Air Force, Vir Chakra, Posthumous
