Lakes of India

India has numerous lakes spread across various states. Some are natural, some artificial, and then there are those irresistible Himalayan lakes too. Water tourism is a great draw, and India has some of the very best in the world. But did you know which are the largest lakes in the country? Spreading across districts, these lakes bless the locals with livelihood, and more. Here are the largest lakes in the country.

Vembanad Lake

Kerala's Vembanad Lake is the largest in the country, and hence is the largest in the state of Kerala. Stretching for 200 sq km, this lake is where the famous Nehru Trophy Boat Race is hosted. It is spread through several districts in the state, and is also the second largest wetland system in the country. The best way to explore the lake is to sail away in a houseboat.

Chilika Lake, Odisha

This brackish water lagoon is one of India's favourite places for migratory birds, and is even home to some rare species of birds. With a rich ecosystem, the Chilika Lake is a prized possession in the country. You can come here to spot migratory birds from November to mid-January, as needless to say that this is a paradise for bird-watchers. It is located about 50 km away from the beach town of Puri.

Shivsagar Lake, Maharashtra

A large reservoir in the state of Maharashtra, it is located in the Satara district. It is a peaceful place that is just perfect for a quick getaway, the cool breeze here will pull you back again and again. Shivsagar Lake is a great place for boating activities, so you might want to try that as well. Greenery all around, the lake is a mesmerising place to say the least.

Indira Sagar Lake, Madhya Pradesh

A charming water tourism destination, complete with a tourism complex and more, this is a great holiday. The lake is the fourth largest in the country, located in the Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh. It offers scenic views, and a tranquil environment for a quick break. Thanks to the Indira Sagar dam project, the lake today is one of the state's great experiences. You can cruise in the waters too!
