Google Duplex AI software will inform callee the call is being recorded
Google's demo of Duplex AI calling system at this year's IO conference kicked up a storm, and it's refusing to settle down.
First there were questions on the deceiving nature in which the AI system talks. Google answered those questions by confirming the AI calling system would identify itself as a software so there's no confusion.
Then came concerns about the line being recorded. According to a new Bloomberg report, the company - at its weekly TGIF staff meeting - confirmed that Duplex will inform the person on the other end that the call is being recorded.
This assumes significance because many US states have laws that do not allow a call to be recorded until both parties agree to it.
Google executives also reassured employees that they have been thinking about disclosure and ethical implications of the technology even before it was demoed at IO.
However, it isn't yet known if business the AI bot talked to in the demo knew they are talking to a bot, and/or are being recorded. The report does note that recording were edited to protect the identity of the callee/business.
