Blast From The Past! When Sachin Tendulkar Almost Took India Over The Line Vs Pakistan From A Hopeless Position

January 31, 1999 will be remembered in cricketing folklore as the day the world witnessed one of the most defiant innings in Test cricket.

India were set a target of 271 against Pakistan in Chennai and Sachin Tendulkar walked out at 6/2. Pretty soon they were tottering at 82/5 and a huge defeat was looming large.

Meanwhile, having seen his partners fall one by one, Sachin launched a fierce counterattack that left the likes of Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Saqlain Mushtaq dazed.

He added 136 runs for the 6th wicket with Nayan Mongia who made a staunch 52.

Sachin was fierce with his cuts and pulls. He also ran quickly. Even as he battled cramps, back pain and fatigue, the visitors were wilting under pressure.

Then, at 254/6, the great man succumbed to the elements and fell for 136. What followed as a collapse like no other as India folded for 258. Pakistan won by 12 runs and what a match it was!

But Sachin's knock drew praise from all quarters. Even the opponents knew they had seen a master at work.

His 136 came in 273 balls and contained 18 fours. It was a case of so near and so far and the ghost of Chennai would haunt him for a while. It would take a match-winning hundred against England in 2008 to exorcise the demons. But that's another story.
