Samsung Galaxy A8, Galaxy A8+ 2018 with 18:9 Infinity Display launched: Specs, features

Galaxy A8 (2018) and Galaxy A8+ (2018) are Samsung’s first mid-range smartphones to come with edge-to-edge screens. Here’s everything you need to know about Samsung’s new smartphones.

Samsung on Monday launched two new smartphones, Galaxy A8 (2018) and Galaxy A8+ (2018). Considered to be successors to the last year’s Galaxy A5, Samsung’s new phones will be available in select markets, starting next month.

Galaxy A8 (2018) and Galaxy A8+ (2018) are also Samsung’s first mid-range smartphones to come with an 18:9 edge-to-edge ‘Infinity Display’.

So far, the display technology was exclusive to the company’s premium range of smartphones, such as Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8.

In a first for Samsung, Galaxy A8 and Galaxy A8+ come with a dual-camera setup on the front that allows users to take selfies with DSLR-like bokeh effect. Other key highlights of the smartphone include Samsung Pay, the company’s digital payment service, and IP68 certification for water and dust resistance.

“With the release of the Galaxy A8(2018) and A8+(2018), we’re bringing our customers’ favorite features from our flagship smartphones, such as the Infinity Display and our first Dual Front Camera with Live Focus, to our Galaxy A series, which is already known for its premium design,” said Junho Park, Vice President of Global Product Planning, Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics in a blog post.

Samsung Galaxy A8, Galaxy A8+: Specifications

Samsung Gaalxy A8 sports a 5.6-inch edge-to-edge screen whereas Galaxy A8+ has a larger 6-inch display. Both the phones sport an 18:5:9 display with 1080p+ resolution. The two smartphones are also the first Samsung devices to support Samsung’s latest Gear VR.

While Galaxy A8 has 4GB of RAM and 32GB/64GB built-in storage, Galaxy A8+ comes in two models – 4GB RAM + 32GB storage and 6GB RAM + 64GB storage.  Both the phones are powered by an octa-core (2.2GHz Dual + 1.6GHz Hexa) processor.

Both Galaxy A8 and Galaxy A8+ come with 16-megapixel and 8-megapixel sensors on the front. On the back, the two phones have a 16-megapixel sensor.

Other common features of Galaxy A8 and Galaxy A8+ include Android 7.1 Nougat and USB-C support. The Galaxy A8 (2018) is powered by a 3,000mAh battery while the A8 (2018) has a bigger 3,500mAh battery.
