Akshay Kumar’s 2017 social drama, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, has flushed the competition down the drain in China, and recorded an opening of Rs 61 crore.
Akshay Kumar-Bhumi Pednekar starrer Toilet Ek Prem Katha has debuted at the number one spot at the China box office. The comedy-drama made Rs 61 crore in its opening weekend in China.
“#ToiletEkPremKatha has a SOLID opening weekend in China... Retains the No 1 spot at China BO on Sun too.” trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted on Monday.
A huge section of the industry was not too confident of the film’s business potential in China due to the rural concern it addresses in the film. However, these recent figures have shown a different story.
TEPK, a satirical comedy in support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s campaign to improve sanitation conditions in India, had hit the domestic box office in August 2017.It became one of the top grossers of 2017 by doing a business of Rs. 134.22 crore in India alone.
Recently, several Indian films such as Dangal, Secret Superstar, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Hindi Medium have proven to be hits with Chinese audiences.
