3 Surprising Habits That Could Be Causing You Eye Irritation

Dry eyes and eye irritation can be caused due to some basic everyday habits that you fail to take note of as being damaging

We all experience unexplained eye irritation from time to time. All the rubbing, tearing up and stinging can be frustrating to say the very least. Whether it's caused because of a foreign body in your eye, due to an allergy or simply because of your surroundings - eye irritation, if not handled on time and correctly can actually disrupt your entire day. Dry eyes and eye irritation can also be caused due to some basic everyday habits that you fail to take note of as being damaging. Here are some habits that unexpectedly aggravate eye irritation. Take note.

1. You constantly check your phone at night

You hear your phone beep and your can't help but turn around and check your notifications, even in the middle of the night. Not only does staring at screens at night disrupt your sleep cycle, but it can also be rather damaging for your eyes. Make sure to keep your electronics away at least an hour before you go to bed. This way, your eyes will get the much needed break they need from screens and their damaging light.

Most screens emit blue light. While this blue light makes the screens more energy efficient, it can actually have an adverse effect on our eye health. That blue light can cause eye-strain, cause dryness in the eyes and even disrupt your sleep cycle. Investing in a good pair of blue light filtering glasses can help mitigate these issues - but that should be your last resort. Reducing screen time, especially at night, should be your first solution.

2. You're sleeping with eye-makeup on

Sleeping with eyeliner or mascara on might not lead to skin damage, but it sure can lead to eye problems. When you sleep with these eye makeup products on, they are likely to end up in your eyes, thus causing significant irritation. If you rub your eyes in your sleep or as soon as you wake up, the dry fragments from these products that could have fallen into your eyes can further cause eye injury.

3. Your ceiling fan is on all night

The ceiling fan in your room might help cool down the temperature and help you fall asleep, but it is one of the things that could be exacerbating your eye irritation. Many times while you sleep, your eyelids could stay slightly open. This by itself can cause dryness, redness, and irritation upon awakening, but it is made worse by the wind created from a ceiling fan over your bed.
