Here are nine simple tips to keep your kidneys healthy

New Delhi: Kidney diseases in India have almost doubled in the past decade and are expected to rise further, the Indian Medical Association has warned. The modern diet has been blamed as the main reason for the rise in prevalence of serious conditions, such as obesity, high blood pressure,  diabetes – all of which increase your risk for chronic kidney disease (CKD). Health experts say there has also been an increase in the number of patients in the age group of 25 to 30 seeking dialysis, a procedure to remove waste products and excess fluid from the blood when the kidneys stop working normally. Kidney failure, also known as end-stage kidney disease, is among the top five major causes of death of people in India.

Kidney diseases are silent killers but there are many steps you can take to reduce your risk. Making healthier lifestyle choices plays an important role in fighting factors that trigger chronic kidney disease. You can’t always prevent chronic kidney disease because some risk factors are not under your control, such as your age, a family history of kidney disease. However, bad diet choices and habits put your kidney health at risk. Maintaining an active, health-conscious lifestyle can be the best thing to ensure your kidneys stay healthy. Here are a few simple tips to protect your kidneys and maintain overall health.

*Keeping fit and active
*Exercising regularly
*Maintaining a healthy weight
*Eating healthy, balanced foods consisting plenty of fruits and vegetables
*Reducing the amount of sugar, salt, and fat in your diet
*Drinking enough quantity of water
*Quitting smoking
*Limiting alcohol intake
*Monitoring blood pressure and blood sugar levels

If you have diseases or conditions that increase your risk of kidney disease, such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, make sure that you work with your doctor to control them. If you’re at risk, you should get regular screenings for kidney disease as early diagnosis and intervention can help slow the progression of CKD.
