Rishi Kapoor attacks Rahul Gandhi’s ‘dynasty politics’ comment: Don’t bullshit people

Actor Rishi Kapoor appears to have taken umbrage at Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi mentioning Bollywood while talking about dynasty politics during his speech at University of California, Berkeley on Tuesday. In a series of tweets, Kapoor gave the example of his family, the Kapoors, as a dynastic clan that has managed to earn people’s respect generation after generation.

Responding to a query that there was a perception that the Congress was associated with dynastic politics, Gandhi had said, “Most of the country runs like this. So, don’t go after me. Akhilesh Yadav is a dynast, Mr Stalin (DMK supremo M Karunanidhi’s son) is a dynast, Mr (Prem Kumar) Dhumal’s son (Anurag Thakur of the BJP) is a dynast. Even Mr Abhishek Bachchan is a dynast, also Mr Ambani.” The 47-year-old Congress leader went on to say, “That’s what happens in India and just the way India runs. The real question is if that person is a capable, sensitive person.”

Reacting to the statement, Kapoor tweeted, “Rahul Gandhi. In the 106 years of Indian cinema of India, Kapoor’s contribution is 90 years. And each generation is chosen by public on merit. By God’s grace we are in 4 generations.Prithviraj Kapoor, Raj Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor-Males.Besides all others. You see otherwise. So don’t bullshit people on “Dynasty” You have to earn people’s respect and love through hard work not zabardasti and gundagardi.”

The question-answer session followed a speech Gandhi delivered at the US university on India at 70: Reflections on the Path Forward. He is the fifth generation of the Nehru-Gandhi family in politics. His father Rajiv Gandhi, grandmother Indira Gandhi and great-grandfather (Jawaharlal Nehru) all served as prime ministers.

Soon after the speech, the Bharatiya Janata Party hit back and called Gandhi a “failed dynast”. “A failed dynast today chose to speak about his failed political journey in the US... the country (India) is not listening so he is speaking somewhere else,” Union information and broadcasting minister Smriti Irani said at a press conference in New Delhi.
