Goa’s new boutique hotel is a lot about art

Anjuna's newest hotel will soon have a microbrewery

 
 

Anjuna gets a lot of things right that most of North Goa’s beaches don’t—it is relatively secluded, yet close to many flea markets, has a buzzing party scene and a fair few restaurants worth your while. What it was lacking was enough high-quality accommodation. Until now.

Enter Anamiva Goa, a new boutique hotel with 19 designer suites and four penthouses. The contemporary Indian decor is ethnic yet edgy: jaali screens in the architecture, right from the lobby, the corridors and even in the bathrooms.  There’s a flamboyant use of copper everywhere: custom-made lampshades, giant thalis retrofitted into coffee tables and spherical tea boxes carved from the rose-tinted metal. The art hotel is owned by painter Anita Lamba, so walls everywhere showcase artworks by emerging artists, curated with help from the Tabeer Gallery.
 
 
 

 
 

A kilometre away from Anjuna beach, just around the corner from other hangouts such as Titlie, Tito’s White House and the Lila café; Anamiva’s reception is set within the Pão Café, so you can lounge over a quick cuppa while the front desk staff checks you in. Most suites have balconies that overlook the pool. Across are step terraces carved into a hillock whose many levels hold the MOYO Kitchen that serves an interesting medley of local Goan, North Indian and continental cuisines. At the highest point of the resort, is the open-air Yana wellness centre that taps into a local roster of Goan bodyworkers and therapists to create a unique spa experiential.
