India vs Australia: Ashwin gets Starc, visitors all out for 260
Friday, February 24, 2017 IST
Australia was all out for 260 after R Ashwin dismissed Mitchell Starc in the first over of the second of the first Test in Pune.
Ravichandran Ashwin struck with the fifth ball of the day as Australia’s first innings came to an early end on Day Two with the visitors finishing with 260 runs on the board at the end of the first innings.
The spirited tenth wicket stand between Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood had helped the visitors crawl back into the game after being reduced to 205/9 on Day One.
Starc started from where he had left on Thursday and slammed Ashwin straight back to collect a boundary off the second ball of the day. Three balls later, he took the aerial route once again; trying to clear the deep midwicket boundary, but Jadeja took a comfortable catch to hand Ashwin his third wicket of the innings. The office was vividly unpleased after the southpaw had picked up the boundary and could be seen clapping as Starc walked back to the stands.
Earlier, it was Matt Renshaw’s gritty knock of 68 that had helped Australia build some momentum in the top-order. The 20-year-old, who scored his maiden half-century against India on Thursday, retired ill midway through his innings with an upset stomach but came back on to help his side who lost wickets at regular intervals.
The dreaded duo Ashwin and Jadeja had ripped through the Australian line-up while Umesh took four wickets, twice in his first over as a change bowler, to provide crucial breakthroughs.
