World Health Day: Five simple habits that enhance weight loss journey, improve fitness

New Delhi: Being fit and healthy doesn’t mean you’ll have to work out for hours each day and go on a crash diet. All it takes is some dedication and discipline towards living a healthy lifestyle, which includes good eating habits and regular physical activity. The good thing is that there are many effective habits you can embrace to help you stay fit and healthy in the long run if practised consistently and carefully. Perhaps, if you’re trying to drop a few pounds fast, making simple lifestyle changes can help you lose weight and keep it off as well. So, if you haven’t been eating healthy or exercising, it’s never too late to start making changes in your diet and activities. On the occasion of World Health Day, which falls on April 7 every year, we give you some healthy tips to help you stay fit and keep diseases at bay.

In fact, making small, consistent changes in the right way is not only effective but also long-lasting. The following activities outline some of the simplest and best ways to boost your metabolism, help you maintain a healthy weight, increase brain function and enhance your overall health. Implement these five easy-to-follow habits into your daily lifestyle for a healthier, happier you.

Adopt healthy eating habits

Focus on fresh fruits and vegetables that are loaded with vitamins, fibre, and antioxidants, which have been shown to provide various health benefits and protect against chronic diseases. Eating more fruits and veggies as part of an overall healthy eating style is essential for keeping your mind and body in tip-top shape. Fruits and veggies can also help you lose weight fast and flatten your tummy in no time. Avoid or limit your intake of processed foods and sugary beverages, such as soda, that can have disastrous effects on health when consumed in excess.

Drink plenty of water

Drinking plenty of water throughout the day is important to maintain hydration levels of your body. Drinking enough water has also been shown to aid in weight loss. Water helps remove harmful toxins from your body, speed up digestion and metabolism naturally, and improves overall health.

Stay active

Regular exercise or physical activity can help improve your health and reduce your risk of certain conditions, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. It is extremely important to stay physically active on a regular basis in order to maintain good health and fitness. If daily exercise isn’t feasible or realistic for you, try opting for activities - such as taking stairs instead of the elevator - that can fit into your daily lifestyle to stay healthy and fit.

Get adequate sleep

Unfortunately, many of us underestimate the importance of a good night’s rest, which is a key part of a healthy lifestyle and happiness. Ensure that you make sleep a priority. It is recommended that an adult should get around 7-8 hours of sleep each night. Lack of sleep can lead to a number of health problems, such as obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. Too little sleep can also impair your weight loss efforts.

Manage stress

Truth is, all of us experience stress in our lives. But, if you experience stress over a prolonged period of time, it can take a toll on your health - both physically and mentally. In today’s hectic lifestyle, one can become too stressed out between juggling work, family and other commitments. However, you need to set time aside to unwind or your health will suffer. Many studies have linked constant stress to a number of physical and mental health conditions. Learning how to manage stress can be hugely beneficial.
