Made in Mandsaur: Will Rahul Gandhi win the kisan vote?
Yesterday in Mandsaur (MP) Congress president Rahul Gandhi held a kisan rally to mark the first anniversary of the police firing in which six farmers died. While meeting the bereaved family members provided emotional visuals, Rahul buttressed that with big promises, such as families getting justice in 10 days and action against those responsible for the firing if Congress came to power.
Reportedly, more promises followed. In 10 days farmers’ loans would also be waived in the state. Congress government would provide livelihood to each and every person there. China would be eating Mandsaur’s garlic. In a few years when people would visit the area they would look at their phones, to find ‘Made in Mandsaur’ written on them.
It’s a moot question why Congress has not used the several opportunities provided by voters in the past, to deliver this heaven on earth. Rahul talked up what Congress had done for farmers in Karnataka. But the party just dropped 44 assembly seats over there. These are simply the sort of tall and undeliverable pledges that have become central to election campaigns – even though they can be counter-productive as far as actually solving problems goes.
But real problems do correlate to real anti-incumbency. That is the strongest card in Rahul’s arsenal. As he plays it shades of resemblance to Narendra Modi’s 2014 campaign are becoming obvious, both in terms of attacks on incumbent government and the promise of acche din.
