Still Making That Goa Plan? Take Inspiration from the Youngest Woman to Travel the World!

It took most of us more than a decade to finally walk over to that gym across the street and start at it. Meanwhile, this 21-year-old lady just became the youngest women to step into every country on the planet!

Meet Lexie Alford, who etched her name in history on 31st May 2019 when she entered North Korea. She now holds the Guinness World Record for being the youngest female to have travelled all 196 sovereign nations. This record was previously held by 24-year-old James Asquith since 2013.

I’m still celebrating all the little victories that happened along the wayЁЯОЙ One of the most difficult aspects of traveling to every country is, of course, VISAS. Applying for all these visas has been a logistical nightmare that’s haunted me for years now. It’s been so stressful I can’t even begin to explain. For perspective, here’s all the countries I had to get visas for as an American citizen (NOT including visa on arrival and evisas): #Algeria, #Libya, #Afghanistan, Mali, #Niger, #BurkinaFaso, #Chad, #CentralAfricanRepublic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, #EquatorialGuinea, #Angola, #Benin, #Nigeria, #RepublicOfTheCongo, #Liberia, #Gambia, #Burundi, #Djibouti, #Eritrea, #Tanzania, #Sudan, #SouthSudan, #Somalia, #Yemen, #China, #Brazil, #Venezuela, #SaudiArabia, #Turkmenistan, #Uzbekistan, #India & #Pakistan. I might have even forgotten a few but hopefully you can see why! I loved getting to visit all of these awesome places but I’m going to need to take a long break from the bureaucracy of obtaining all these silly stickers in my passportЁЯШВ

Based out of California, Lexie owes it to her parents who own a travel agency. Travelling has been a major part of her lifestyle ever since she was a child. However, the idea to create a world record out of her habitual voyaging struck her rather recently.

Nothing says "sit and stay a while" like rolling green foothills adorned with an untamed river ЁЯМ┐ Something I never expected to get out of traveling was an overwhelming appreciation for where I grew up. It’s also funny showing people photos like these because no one ever expects there to be more to California than what they’ve seen in Hollywood movies! When I got out of school I wanted to get as far away from this little town as possible but for the past couple of months I’ve wanted to spend time at home more than anything. Maybe this means I’ve found my tipping point - how long away from home is too long. Or maybe it just means that 124 countries in 2 1/2 years is simply too much travelЁЯШВ таАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаА Thanks for capturing the beauty of Northern California with me!ЁЯТЪ @angelanunninkphotography

Speaking on how travelling shaped her personality, she said that her parents emphasised on exposing her to new ways of life from around the world. This made her eager to discover how different people approached the idea of happiness.

What are 3 defining moments in your life? I’ve been thinking about this a lot and thought it would be a fun exercise to do with you guys. As someone that goes through tons of phases, both positive and negative, I get so nostalgic when I think about the things that brought me to where I am today. Here’s a few of my turning points: таАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаА 1. The day I passed my exams to skip Junior & Senior years of high school. 2. Bungee jumping in Switzerland the summer after I graduated from college.таАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаА 3. The very first time I thought about breaking the world record for the youngest person to travel to every country таАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаА таАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаА I’ve got a pretty huge life achievement coming up with visiting my last country (!!) which I already know is going to change so much in my life. This photo may be a hint about the first place I’m going back to after I break the record ЁЯШЙ

Lexie mentions that all was fun and games! But when she realised that people have started looking up to her, she decided not to abandon their faith and took things ever more seriously.

Offbeat places, friendly faces Here’s some of my favorite photos from the two things I loved most about Pakistan: the people & the mountains! This trip... the grit of it, the awesome conversations, the depth of experiences and sense of real exploration are what I'm always trying to find my way back to. I’m still processing all the funny & heartwarming things that happened. For example, the man in photo #5 and I traded glasses then he proceeded to create a standup comedy bit about how he wouldn’t give them back. I couldn’t understand a word he said but he had a whole crowd of people laughing in the market. Then there was this young man in photo #9 who ran all the way to his house & back to bring us hot tea when we were stuck in the van behind a landslide for 6 hours in the middle of nowhere. So much LOVE from the places you least expect. Oh, and I guess these mountains were pretty cool tooЁЯШЖ

Though she admits that things had become more challenging now that she was an inspiration to many, especially young women. This support kept her strong and from giving up under pressure. One of her prime focuses was to show everyone that the world isn't as scary as the media portrays it to be and that kindness still persists everywhere.

This was one of the top 5 craziest adventures of my life! After riding like maniacs on the top of our 15 passenger van through the Karakoram Mountains for countless hours we arrived at the launching point. We switched into these 4x4 rock crawling land rovers and ascended up the aptly named “most dangerous road in the world”. The local driver swerved recklessly around loose gravel corners with heart pounding 500+ ft. drops to the left. After nearly 3 hours of that, we arrived at the starting point for the hike to Fairy Meadows. Our group quickly fell into different paces which gave us time to feel even more secluded in the deep wilderness of Northern Pakistan. We hiked up roughly 2500 ft. as the sun set on the little Swiss cabins we would sleep in that night. The temperature dropped rapidly. All our bodies were acting funny because of the altitude. The 10 of us huddled around the common room stove sharing stories and stretching our deliciously sore muscles. ‘Twas a day & night that I’ll never forget тЬМЁЯП╝#pakistandiaries

When I mention traveling to Turkmenistan, people have been giving me this blank confused stare then ask what is it- a place, a city, what? таАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаА So here’s 5 interesting facts about the little known country of Turkmenistan: таАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаА таАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаА - After Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan is the least densely populated country in Central Asia with less than 6 million people living there. It’s also one of the least visited countries in the world. таАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаА - Turkmenistan has been at the crossroads of Islamic civilization since medieval times and its home to several UNESCO Silk Road cities. It was annexed by the Russian Empire in 1800’s then became apart of the Soviet Union in 1924. The country gained independence in 1991. таАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаА - Turkmenistan is ruled by ‘Presidents for Life’ and since it’s independence there’s only been two (very eccentric) presidents. One of them even renamed the days of the week after Turkmen heroes, including himself ЁЯШВ таАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаА - Turkmenistan has the 6th largest natural gas reserves in the world which gives an explanation to the very apparent wealth throughout Ashgabat. таАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаА - Considered the North Korea of Central Asia, Turkmenistan is one of the hardest countries to travel to because of strict visa applications requiring tour agencies and a mandatory guide. таАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаА таАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаАтаА This photo by @fearlessandfar was taken at the Monument of Neutrality in Ashgabat (think Las Vegas meets Pyongyang). Huge thank you to @lupinetravel for putting together such an epic itinerary for us! If you’re interested in going to Turkmenistan, they’re definitely the people you’ll want to arrange your tour with.

In a vivid revelation, she disclosed that it was in October 2016 when she first thought about setting a record while sitting in her home in California. It had been two years since she graduated and received her associate's degree from college. As she was preparing to start her gap year, she dropped the idea of going back to school and instead, began to pursue the record full-time.

When asked about how she managed to plan her funding, she revealed that she did have to put a lot of thought behind it. Getting some branded deals throughout her journey due to her active online presence greatly benefited her. Photography and blogging also helped her make money. She also co-hosted a travel show, which will be out soon.

Her advice to youngsters is to not spend their early years on material possessions but make most of their time and see all that the world has to offer.
