While driving, the driver usually experiences a range of emotions. At times fear, at times, anger, at times happiness or maybe excitement, to name a few. And now, American multinational automaker Ford has developed a car that can not just read these emotions, but also display them on the vehicle! The new innovation has been named the ‘Buzz Car’ by Ford. It has been created in collaboration with Designworks. Buzz Car is a customised Ford Focus RS that incorporates wearable and artificial intelligence technology. Essentially, the car identifies the emotion with the help of two sensors that the driver has to wear on the wrists. While one monitors heart rate, the other measures the skin response.

The moment when the technology detects an excited emotion is called the ‘buzz moment’. Ford states that each time the sensors detect a ‘buzz moment’ – when the driver is excited and their heart rate increases – a dazzling light display appears across both the interior and exterior of the car. The Buzz Car is reportedly a Ford Focus RS that is not just equipped with wearable technology, but also a high-performance gaming PC with artificial intelligence software, light strips and thousands of LED lights. This is what helps the car translate the driver’s emotions onto the exteriors of the car. The car, however, won’t be hitting the roads anytime soon. But Ford hopes that this piece of innovation will help in understanding how vehicles can respond to drivers’ emotions.

The Mirror reports that this is part of a wider project, wherein Ford is investigating how in-car systems may one day be aware of our emotions, stress, distraction and fatigue. This will help in giving prompts and warnings and even perhaps take control during emergency situations. Studying ways to allows cars to better respond to driver emotions, seems to be a growing trend in the automotive industry, says Ford. Ultimately, the company says that the goal is to move towards safer roads and a healthier driving.
