Fossil Sport is the first affordable smartwatch with the Snapdragon Wear 3100
Friday, November 9, 2018 IST
We’ve been talking about the Snapdragon Wear 3100 chipset for all throughout the year. Google is said to be leveraging this new wearable SoC in upcoming smartwatches and then there were rumors about the chip being used in devices other than smartwatches (think the successor to Google Glass). Finally, just two months ago Qualcomm officially announced the Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform and gave us a lot of details about its improvements over the predecessor. So now that the chips are available for vendors to put into their products, Fossil is the first one to put it in an affordable device as they have just announced the Fossil Sport smartwatch.
The Fossil Sport smartwatch is going on sale this week at a starting price of $255. I say starting price because the device comes in two different sizes with one being 41mm and the other being 43mm. Not only is the smartwatch the first affordable one to feature the Snapdragon Wear 3100 (the first device to use the chip was the Montblanc Summit 2, which cost over $900), it’s also the first device from Fossil to feature the chipset as well. We generally see these sports smartwatches and fitness bands being less expensive than others due to their less luxurious design and build materials.

That’s not to say the Fossil Sport is an ugly device though. Fossil has done well with the price point they were aiming at. And with actual smartphone OEMs seemingly giving up on Wear OS, these are the companies who are keeping the platform alive. The Fossil Sport comes with a full circular touchscreen display, a heart rate monitor, NFC, GPS, a magnetic charging mechanism, and interchangeable straps in 18mm and 22mm sizes. We have yet to be told exactly what size the touchscreen of these devices is but the company did say it would offer 24+ hour battery life.
Those out in New York City from November 9th to the 11th will be able to see the two variants of the Fossil Sport with their own eyes. This is thanks to a pop-up kiosk which Fossil has set up on 138 Wooster St from 10 AM to 7 PM. Not only will you get to check these devices out, but you’ll also be able to buy the watch, some interchangeable straps, and possibly win some prizes.
