Mumbai Police's witty take on Prithvi Shaw's record-breaking debut hundred
Friday, October 5, 2018 IST
Mumbai Police

Prithvi Shaw's dream Test debut got everyone talking on Twitter and Mumbai Police couldn't stop themselves from jumping on to the bandwagon.

Prithvi shaw etched his name in the history books as he blasted a 99-ball century on debut, on Day 1 of the first Test in Rajkot on Thursday.

Shaw took 99 balls to reach his hundred and joined the league of extraordinary gentlemen to achieve the feat in their debut Test.

At 18 years and 329 days, Shaw became second youngest batsman after Sachin Tendulkar (17 years, 107 days) to score a Test hundred. In fact, Shaw is also the youngest of 15 debut centurions for India in Test cricket.

Shaw also scored the third quickest century on debut when he reached the three-figure mark and is now also the seventh youngest player in Test cricket history to score a hundred on debut.

Shaw had shot to prominence with a record-breaking 546 off 330 balls in school cricket as a 14-year-old. Over the years, he fulfilled the early promise and went on to score a hundred on debut in Ranji Trophy - during a semi-final for Mumbai against Tamil Nadu.

He now happens to be the only man with a hundred on debut in Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy and Test cricket.

The 293nd Indian to don the Test cap for India, the people of Mumbai have always been proud of the 'little' one. And after one of their very own flourished on the international stage, the Mumbai Police applauded Shaw's efforts with a witty tweet.

"From our 100 to yours! It's always a good start... the very best to you," they tweeted.
With his scintillating hundred on debut, Shaw has joined the likes of famous Indian batsmen: Lala Amarnath, Deepak Shodhan, AG Kripal Singh, Abbas Ali Baig, Hanumant Singh, Gundappa Vishwanath, Surender Amarnath, Mohammad Azharuddin, Pravin Amre, Sourav Ganguly, Virender Sehwag, Suresh Raina, Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma.

After the match, Shaw dedicated his debut hundred to his hero - his dad.

"I was thinking about Dad, as he has sacrificed a lot for me.... My first hundred.. it's all for him. Whenever I score, I score for him," Shaw told the official broadcasters at the end of the day.

Shaw admitted he was a bit nervous at the start of the innings but added he felt much better after his first hour at the crease. "Feeling really good now, after the hundred. I was a bit nervous to start off but when I got in, I got comfortable.

"I just tried to play my natural game. I was just thinking that it's another game for me and then it just happened. I played the balls on merit and kept on going from thereon."
Gavaskar too was impressed with Shaw's performance, saying that the young star really showed that belonged to the Test level.

"He (Shaw) showed he belonged to the Test level and the West Indies bowlers gave him some loose deliveries to get him going. It was a very good pitch to bat on but having said that, you still have to get runs and he did that in style," Gavaskar told India Today.

Gavaskar, who had himself debuted against West Indies (albeit a far more fearsome on far quicker pitches), said he was happy and proud for Shaw, who made an immediate statement.

However, Gavaskar pointed out there would be sterner tests ahead for Shaw in the time to come.

"I am very happy for him. India have got a terrific opening batsman now. But there will be some very stern tests ahead. The opposition does not know about you to begin with but they start preparing for you as you play more and more," he said.
