Benefits of an Exercise Ball

A workout with an exercise ball can be a beneficial way to help improve muscle tone and balance. Exercise balls are air-filled and comfortable to use during fitness workouts. They are lightweight and durable. Some of the colorful exercise balls can support up to 600 pounds. It is not uncommon for the exercise ball to be referred to as a Swiss ball, stability ball, gym ball, or a yoga ball.

Common Uses

The good news is that you don't have to be a personal trainer or a physical therapist to use an exercise ball. An exercise ball may be used with yoga or with a Pilates exercise program. It may also be used for physical therapy purposes. Always remember, it is advantageous to check with your doctor before beginning a fitness exercise program, especially if you have any injuries or medical conditions. People may use exercise balls to stretch their muscles or do basic abdominal exercises. They can be used for low-impact aerobic exercise and strength training exercise routines.

Improve Your Flexibility

The correct use of an exercise ball during your fitness routine may help improve your flexibility. You can use an exercise ball to warm up and stretch your muscles before you begin a workout. This may possibly prevent injury, and also help to keep your muscles and joints functional.

Strengthen the Core Muscles

When you use an exercise ball properly, you may help to strengthen your abdominal muscles and lower back muscles. These are the muscles that protect your lumbar spine. These muscles help to maintain the core stability in your body. We often use this group of muscles when we perform many of our daily activities, such as lifting and reaching. Using the exercise ball may keep your stabilizer muscles more conditioned. Some muscles in the core area include the rectus abdominis, transverse abdominis, obliquus abdominis, and the erector spinae. These muscles help our bodies move in any direction. A strong core may protect the lumbar back area and help to balance any weight-bearing stresses. These core muscles stabilize the spine, pelvis and shoulder.

Improve Your Balance

Even when you are just sitting on the ball, it engages the stabilizer muscles. You need to use your abdominal and back muscles to keep your balance on the ball. Training with an exercise ball in the right manner may be beneficial for healthy posture. It is important to maintain proper alignment when using an exercise ball to prevent injury.

Adding an exercise ball to your fitness routine helps to add some variety to your daily workout. Some fitness experts believe that people with strong cores may have a decreased risk for future injury in that muscle area.

In summary, using an exercise ball during your fitness routine may improve core alignment and muscle strength, flexibility and coordination. Strong core muscles also help maintain good posture.
