Anglerfish With “Fin-Feet” Found Walking Deep Under The Atlantic Ocean
Tuesday, January 14, 2020 IST
Scientists sailing on a research trip have captured videos of an anglerfish with fin-feet, i.e. fins that can be used as feet. They found this fish deep under the surface of the ocean- the areas that receive no sunlight.
The Pink Frogmouth (Chaunax pictus) can reach up to a length of five feet while weighing close to 110 pounds. But what makes the fish special, is the presence of fin-feet.
The anglerfish was recorded in Mona Canyon off the coast of Puerto Rico. This was recorded on the Okeanos expedition of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. They are usually found at depths of 200-900 meters, in both the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.
Near the coast of Columbia, the anglerfish was discovered in 1976 in the Caribbean Sea. It was considered to be one of the most hideous animals surviving on this planet. It also lived at the pit of the ocean where no natural light could reach. To know about this fish, scientists had used an ROV or remotely operated underwater vehicle for seafloor exploration. The Pink Frogmouth is known to live on shrimps only.
Interestingly, anglerfish have been said to be vicious while mating. The females have long spikes that they attach to the males. The male’s blood siphons off into the female, with his organs withering away. Only the skin and testes of the male remain after the mating is complete.
