Apple Is Facing A Lawsuit For Secretly Disabling Your Old iPhone Chargers, So You Buy A New One

It's only been a little while since Apple found itself in hot water for throttling processing speeds on older iPhones and the company's already found itself a new problem. They're facing a lawsuit for allegedly disabling old iPhone chargers to promote replacement purchases.

Monica Emerson, a resident of California, recently filed a new class action lawsuit against the technology giant. The complaint alleges that Apple pushed an update to its phones, starting November 2016, to intentionally have them reject older iPhone chargers. The result was that users were forced to buy new chargers.

In a copy of the charges, obtained by MacRumours, it states that, "In an effort to dominate the cellular telephone marketplace, Apple Inc. forced updates to the iPhones which were specifically designed and programmed to reject, starting on November of 2016, old iPhone chargers from properly charging the iPhones."

Possibly patch number 10.1.1, it was supposedly specifically designed not to accept charging from older chargers. Of course, just like with the throttling, this wasn't informed to users, who were forced to pay for new chargers, the statement reads.

Of course, though Emerson says she used the original Apple charger, there's no mention of whether she also used an Apple-certified Lightning cable, which is an important detail. Either way though the case, which is set for a trial in the near future, is seeking $5 million in damages.
