life skills for youth

What are you learning about life skills?

You go to school or university every day to learn new things. But you were never taught how to take care of heart, mind, body, and speech. You were never given the basic life skills as human beings.

There are different subjects in our schools and universities, but there are no classes on how to take care of ourselves when life presents us with difficult situations. We have no skills or tools on how to deal with them?

Change within

You are emotionally and socially changing from inside and out. Whether it is the way of thinking, feeling and seeing, you are starting to rediscover yourself.

Maybe your perception of life is completely different than your family and this is confusing for you. You hear yourself say- why they are so different than me? why can't they understand me? they are so stuck up.

Becoming who you are-

Your senses have opened up and you do not see things as they do. Neither do you need to be taught or given a lecture on what you are doing right or wrong?

A story about pressure

Let’s talk about an example of this. The mere pressure from your family, friends, and society can make you take the wrong decisions in your life like- what you should study in high school or university, who you should marry and so on. Your father might be a doctor and thinks that you should be one. That I think is as weird in itself as you are a different human being than your father. If you choose something by a mere pressure then you will never be happy.

Now you might ask what I should do instead.

Here a story for you from a different situation. A story about those who give up and those who do things because of peer pressure.

When I was in grade 5 we had a girl in our class who had special needs. She was not so good at reading in front of the class and she was never the brightest student in any topic. My class students made fun of her and threw her things on the floor. They pulled her hair and made fun of her.

One day, I passed by her and I didn’t do anything about it. But her eyes said a lot to me and I kept that with me.

Sudden courage called human wisdom

The next time they did the same thing I got so upset that I stood in front of her and told my classmates: “What has she done to you? Why do you all treat her so badly? Don’t you see she is scared? If you try to harm her I will beat the shit out of you all”.

When they met my eyes they saw how fierce I looked and I saw the fear in their eyes. They all left for the sports class. I put all her things back from her bag that had fallen down. She looked at me with fear in her eyes still shaking as I touched her hand.

I touched her gently and said: “No one will hurt you again. If they do I will beat them all up”. She looked at me and smiled.

While I said those words I wondered where the hell I got this courage from. I felt responsible for her and at the same time, I felt proud of myself. From that day onwards no one bothered her.

Why am I telling you this story? This experience and many more events that happened in my life taught me that things have their own way of working out. So don’t be too hard on yourself if you fail an exam, did not make the grade you were targeting or end up not choosing the life others have decided for you.

Courageous people do things outside the box. Are you one of them?
