No college degree needed to work in Tesla, says Elon Musk: So what do you need?

SpaceX and Tesla CEO and founder Elon Musk stated that you still don't need a college degree to work in Tesla. So what does he look for in potential employees?

Founder and CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, and the most Most Innovative Leader of 2019 as per Forbes, Elon Musk recently stated that you don't a college degree to work on his automotive and energy company,Tesla.

You still don't need a college degree to work in Tesla, Musk tweeted last Sunday.

He responded "Yes" when asked "Do you still stand firmly on not requiring college degrees?"

This is not the first time Elon Musk has made clear his lack of seriousness about a college degree - especially since Steve Jobs and Bill Gates didn't clear college to become who they did.

In a 2014 interview with German publication Auto Bild, Musk had said that "there's no need even to have a college degree at all, or even high school" to work in Tesla.

He was answering a question on whether he considered which college a potential Tesla employee studied in before hiring him or her.

Why doesn't Elon Musk think a college degree is important?

Musk explained in the interview that it wasn't always necessary that a person who graduated from a great college would be capable of great things.

He gave the examples of Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Oracle founder Larry Ellison to say that even if these people didn't graduate from college, it would have been a good idea to hire them.

However, Elon Musk himself has attended the University of Pennsylvania and received undergraduate degrees in physics and economics.

What does Elon Musk look for in his employees?

Musk looks for the "evidence of exceptional ability" in his potential employees rather than any prestigious college degree.

He explained that if a candidate has done some really exceptional work before, it is highly likely that the person will do so again.

Thus, he asks interview candidates about the kinds of problems they have encountered in previous jobs and how they went about solving them. It is this problem-solving skill that he holds in high regard.

He also asks detailed questions about these achievements so that the potential employee cannot bluff or take credit for work that someone else had done. If the person is lying, he or she wouldn't be able to answer such in-depth questions.
