Residing in the heart of the beautiful state of Madhya Pradesh, the lovely city of Gwalior is known for its palaces and temples and offers a history-rich aesthetic as well. One of the biggest palaces in the country is the Jai Vilas Mahal, situated in Gwalior, which attracts tourists from across the globe.

One of the biggest palaces in the country is the Jai Vilas Mahal, situated in Gwalior, which attracts tourists from across the globe.

Here are few interesting facts we found about the palace built by Maharaja Srimanta Madhavrao Scindia and what make it unique:
 
1. Built in 1874 by Maharajadhiraj Shrimant Jayajirao Scindia Alijah Bahadur and costing a whopping Rs. 1 crore back then, the beautiful palace is worth over Rs. 4000 crore today. It has a huge court hall and houses over 5000 books. The palace was designed by architect Sir Michael Filose who drew inspiration from Italian,Tuscan and Corinthian style of architecture.
 
 

2. There are over 400 rooms in the palace, a part of which is used as a museum to treasure history. Spread over 1,240,771 square feet, a major part of the palace has been preserved the way it was built. One of the biggest attractions of this palace include a 3500 kg chandelier. 
 
The roof is adorned in gold and legend has it that around 8 elephants were suspended from the roof to check if the roof could bear the weight of the chandelier before its installation!

3. The majestic palace was built as a gesture of grand welcome for the Prince of Wales, King Edward VI and was also the residence of the Scindia dynasty and was made open to the general public in 1964.  
 
Freshly minted BJP leader Jyotiraditya Scindia is the current legal owner of this magnanimous palace, and his property inheritance is known to be close to USD 2 billion.
