After SC verdict, vendors are as clueless about ‘green firecrackers’ as the consumer

Vendors in Delhi's Sadar Bazar say that a majority of their stock consists of firecrackers now banned by the Supreme Court adding that neither customers nor shopkeepers fully understand 'green firecrackers'.
New Delhi: Following the Supreme Court order yesterday, there is widespread confusion about the segregation of firecrackers into categories of 'green' and otherwise. The Supreme Court on Tuesday permitted citizens to celebrate a Diwali with firecrackers that emit less smoke and produce less sound during the coming festive season.
Vendors in Delhi's Sadar Bazar area who were anxiously waiting for the Supreme Court verdict say that 80 per cent of their inventory consists of firecrackers that do not fall into the list of acceptable incendiaries. In the wake of the verdict, vendors were coming up with ways to dispose of loud and smoke emitting firecrackers including pyrotechnics they had from last year.
However, the talk of the town is a consumer's understanding of 'green' firecrackers. A vendor told Times of India that since such firecrackers are more expensive than others, not many shopkeepers have them in stock. "Very few people specifically ask for them", he said adding that disposing of the stock is not something they have a lot of confidence in this year.
Firecrackers cannot be easily segregated into 'green' and otherwise because they have no such disclaimer on the packaging which makes it difficult for both vendors and buyers to confuse them with regular firecrackers. As per the Supreme Court verdict, 'ladis' or a string of bombs tied together have been banned from this year onwards. The verdict is in line with the top court's mission to bring down air pollution levels in Delhi which shuttle between ‘very poor’ and ‘hazardous’.
