Day after Andheri bridge collapse, bridge at Mumbai

As heavy rains hit Mumbai on Tuesday and many areas got waterlogged, a road at Grant Road station has now developed cracks.

Cracks have been developed on road of Frere bridge connecting Grant road and Nana Chowk.

Taking precautions, the Mumbai police have diverted the traffic towards Kennedy bridge.

Over the last two day, Mumbai city has been witnessed heavy rains due to which a part of road over-bridge (ROB) collapsed on rail tracks in suburban Andheri on Tuesday, affecting local train services on the Western line till late evening. At least five people were also injured in the incident.

According to Indian Meteorological Department, rains were to once again hit the city in full force from evening till late night. Mumbai and several areas in Konkan are likely received heavy to very heavy rainfall between July 4 and July 6.

Akshay Deoras, an independent meteorologist said that with windy weather Mumbai is already witnessing very active monsoon conditions and Mumbai will witness frequent showers of moderate to heavy intensity till July 6.

There are 274 bridges in the city that include flyovers, subways, road overbridges, foot overbridges, and railway foot overbridges. Out of the total, island city has 77 bridges, western suburbs 137 and eastern suburbs have 60 bridges. Of the total, 77 fall on railway land.

After Andheri's incident, the audit of railover and footover bridges has come to limelight. However, instead of a joint action, both the agencies have engaged in blame game.

Mumbai Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar has passed the buck on Railways after a road over-bridge (ROB) collapsed. "It was railway's responsibility to check if the bridge was in good condition. BMC is nowhere responsible for the incident," he said.

In  march, the Bombay High Court had directed the Railways and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to submit structural audit reports of bridges that need to be demolished.
