No firecrackers this Diwali: SC puts on hold sale in Delhi-NCR till November 1
Monday, October 9, 2017 IST
The Supreme Court put on hold the sale of firecrackers in Delhi-NCR on Monday, saying its earlier order permitting them will come into effect from November 1, almost two weeks after Diwali.
On September 12, the apex court lifted “for the time being” its order of suspending the permanent licences for sale and retail of firecrackers within the National Capital Region (NCR).
The apex court, however, had said its order lifting the suspension of permanent licences might require a review after Diwali, depending on the ambient air quality after the festival. It directed the Delhi Police to reduce the number of temporary licences by 50% of those granted last year and cap it at 500.
