Triple talaq bill in Lok Sabha, Sachin Tendulkar’s debate in Rajya Sabha: Parliament’s packed agenda today

The business schedule is likely to be disrupted as Congress is demanding PM Narendra Modi’s apology for his remarks against his predecessor, Manmohan Singh.

The Narendra Modi government has lined up two key bills for tabling in Lok Sabha on Thursday even as possibilities of disruption loom large on the House.

The Centre will introduce The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights of Marriage) Bill, which criminalises instant triple talaq, in Lok Sabha on Thursday.

The bill imposes a prison term of up to three years and fine on husbands who violate the law. It also has a provision for alimony for the woman on whom instant triple talaq has been pronounced and grants her the custody of her minor children.

The Lok Sabha, which passed two bills including the Indian Forests amendment bill, will also see the bill to amend The Specific Relief Act, 1963, to cap compensation for infrastructure and development projects, as granted by courts.

The bill is seen as yet another step of the government towards improving ease of doing business in the country.

Despite the confrontation between the Congress and the BJP over PM Modi’s remarks on his predecessor, the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha had continued on Wednesday.

As the BJP has ruled out PM’s apology as demanded earlier by the Congress, chances of peace in both Houses looks dim.

In the Upper House, cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar has given notice to discuss right to play and the future of sports in India.

The government has listed a bill to amend the NABARD Act. The bill allows the central government to increase NABARD’s capital to Rs 30,000 crore. The NABARD provides fund for rural and agriculture sector.

The Upper House will also take up The State Banks (Repeal and Amendment) Bill. This bill follows the cabinet approval for allowing the SBI to acquire some subsidiaries.

The government will move another bill in Rajya Sabha to declare the Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy to be an institution of national importance.
