Ranbir Kapoor's Sanju has broken all these records in 4 days
Wednesday, July 4, 2018 IST
Ranbir Kapoor

Rajkumar Hirani is known to bring something unique and interesting to the big screen with each of his films. If Munna Bhai series taught us about Gandhigiri, 3 Idiots gave friendship goals and PK touched upon communal tensions and fanaticism. And now four years later, Hirani is back, and that too with a biopic.

It's not easy to make a film on the life of a person who has been in the public eye for most part of his life. If Sanjay Dutt's colourful life was splashed all over the tabloids, his tryst with AK-56 got him behind the bars for many years.

Despite most of his story being known to the entire world, Rajkumar Hirani decided to make a biopic on Bollywood's original bad boy. The result - a superhit.

Sanju has not only got a thumbs up from fans and critics alike, but the biopic is unstoppable at the box office.

After zooming past the Rs 100-crore mark in its opening weekend, Sanju is now marching towards the Rs 150-crore club.

Within four days of its release, Hirani's directorial venture has already broken a few records.

Biggest opener of 2018

Just a fortnight ago, Salman Khan's Race 3 was pronounced as the biggest opener of 2018 with the action thriller minting Rs 29.17.

Because Bhai film + Eid = blockbuster.

However, Ranbir Kapoor's Sanju proved that you don't need a holiday weekend or a festival to pack a punch at the box office. The biopic has overthrown Race 3 to become the biggest opener of this year so far, by collecting Rs 34.75 crore.
Highest single day for a Hindi film

And when you thought Sanju was only giving stuff competition to Race 3 numbers at the box office, the biopic surprised everyone by beating the record of Baahubali 2 (Hindi). Sanju has smashed Baahubali 2 record, by scoring highest single day for a Hindi film ever. Baahubali 2 (Hindi) collected Rs 46.50 cr on its Day 3, while Sanju has surpassed it by earning Rs 46.71 cr on its Day 3.
Highest opening weekend grosser of 2018

At a time when Salman Khan's Race 3 has being declared a dud, Ranbir Kapoor and Hirani have proved that content is king. If Sanju baba's colourful life has got many takers, fans are also thronging the theatres for Kapoor and Hirani. Such has been the crazy business at the box office that Sanju has not just become the biggest opener of 2018, but also emerged as the highest opening weekend grosser of 2018. Beating the likes of Race 3, Padmaavat, Baaghi 2 and Raid, Hirani's Sanju has emerged as the true winner at the ticket window.

If Padmaavat earned Rs 114 crore in its 5-day extended weekend, Race 3 managed to get Rs 106.47 in its kitty in the first three days of its release. But Sanju managed to beat both the films by earning Rs 120.06 crore in its opening weekend.

Biggest opener for Ranbir Kapoor and Rajkumar Hirani

Ranbir Kapoor tryst with box-office numbers isn't something to boast about. His films might have been interesting and experimental but seldom they have made big numbers at the box office. But it all changed with Sanju. The biopic, in which Ranbir has stepped into the shoes of Sanjay Dutt, has not only become the biggest opener of 2018, but also biggest opener of Ranbir's decade-long career. His 2013 film Besharam made Rs 21.56 crore on its opening day, and was his best number-spinner till date.

Similarly, Hirani's 2014 film PK with Rs 26.63 on its opening day had set the record of his biggest opener. But Sanju beat PK by earning Rs 34.75 crore on its opening day.
