Abhishek Bachchan and Karisma were nothing less than a Bollywood royalty. The two dated for good five years before getting engaged in 2002 on Amitabh Bachchan's 60th birthday. In a throwback interview, Karisma had revealed how Abhishek Bachchan proposed to her with a diamond ring and how she reacted. While speaking to the media, Karisma had told, "Abhishek (Bachchan) presented me with a diamond ring and proposed to me all of a sudden. I could not say no."

She had also further added, "I feel I have found the right person in Abhishek, and I couldn't have asked for a better family than the Bachchans." However, their engagement didn't last long after that. Neither family chose to divulge the reason behind the couple parting ways, and a whole buch of rumours starting doing the rounds. Karisma's aunt, Neetu Kapoor, had addressed the news of their break-up and had said "Don't ask me too much. I don''t know what went wrong. But they have split. Yes, it is very sad."

According to a report in Cosmopolitan, it was Karisma's mother Babita who drove a wedge in their relationship. It's no secret that Babita single-handedly raised her daughters, Karisma and Kareena, after her separation from Randhir Kapoor. She wanted to ensure that her daughters never felt the lack of money in their lives. Karisma was already an established actress when she was in a relationship with Abhishek Bachchan. Abhi was still in the process of making a name for himself. It was also reported that the Bachchans were going through a rough patch, financially, courtesy a failed production house and rising debts.

Apparently, Babita was not too confident about Abhishek's acting abilities and demanded a pre-nuptial agreement, according to which Amitabh would transfer a portion of his wealth in his son's name, so that Karisma would be financially secure. The Bachchans refused to comply, which resulted in Abhishek and Karisma's break-up.

Other reasons doing the rounds were Karisma being asked to bid adieu to her acting career and Jaya Bachchan keeping control over her son Abhishek's life.

Well, till date the mystery around Abhishek and Karisma's breakup has not been solved. For those who don't know, it was at Nikhil Nanda (Raj Kapoor's daughter's son) and Shweta Bachchan's wedding in 1997 that brought Karisma and Abhishek closer.
