8 Legendary Rare Cars That We Are Sure Money Alone Won

While the modern marvels of hybrid engineering and high-octane racing performance come at their own stratospheric heights of bank balance requirements, ever true enthusiast knows that the best cars aren't necessarily the fastest - although I'll be damned if they don't look the part, and have truly stood the test of time for several decades.

While production numbers are incredibly low compared to most commercial cars, these unique, beautiful machines are also hard to obtain because of their elusiveness on the auction market. You really need to know and impress some of the wealthiest people on the planet to even put an offer on the table.

Not a single car on this list costs a dime less than $8 million. To wrap your mind around these dizzying prices, we've included a simple metric - the equivalent number of purchasable top-range Suzuki Swift vehicles. You're welcome.

1. 2008 Maybach Exelero

Top Speed: 350kmph

Units Produced: 1

Cost in USD: $8 Million

Worth in Swifts: 296 Units

When Maybach set out to create the most expensive, opulent, exclusive one-off luxury sedan in history, they definitely skipped any corner-cutting - this beastly machine sold for $8 million to American rapper Birdman, who after being unable to afford the car, sold it to a much wealthier musician - Jay-Z himself.

2. 1927 Bugatti Type 41 Royale Kellner Coupe

Top Speed: 160kmph

Units Produced: 7

Cost in USD: $9.7 Million

Worth in Swifts: 359 Units

Before Bugatti developed a reputation for making the fastest cars in the world, they happened to start from decidedly un-humble beginnings - making the most luxurious cars in the world. Beginning production way back in 1927, only 25 were ever planned. Only seven were made, and only three have been sold - with the prime example flaunting a brain-imploding $9.7 million pricetag.

One of the three sold was wrecked by company founder Ettore Bugatti - now that's as Italian as it gets.

3. 1998 McLaren F1 LM

Top Speed: 362kmph

Units Produced: 6

Cost in USD: $13.75 Million

Worth in Swifts: 509 Units

The McLaren F1 is often considered the original modern supercar, and six of these LM editions were built to commemorate the five McLaren F1 GTRs that competed in the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans and took four of the five top spots (including first).

Five of these have been sold in their original papaya paint jobs, and one was auctioned in 1998 for a staggering $13.75 million.

4. 1970 Porsche 917

Top Speed: 390kmph

Units Produced: 50 (Approx.)

Cost in USD: $14 Million

Worth in Swifts: 518 Units

This famous sports car prototype gave Porsche its first overall win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970 and 1971. It was also featured in the Steve McQueen film, Le Mans, elevating the car to near-cult status. The 917 driven by McQueen in the film sold at an auction for $14 million in 2017, setting a record price for Porsche.
