Should You Mix Your Protein Powder With Milk Or Water?

Protein shakes are good for you

For a lot of gym-goers, protein is essential and that's where protein powders and shakes come into use for a lot of vegetarians. Whey protein, in particular, is a good source of natural nutrition derived out of whey, which is the liquid part of milk left behind during the production of cheese. Since it contains all nine essential amino acids and is fairly low on the lactose content, it can be a convenient way to replace whole foods.

The ideal way to use protein powders

Having around 25-30 grams of whey protein every day (apart from regular intake) is very helpful and most fitness experts and dieticians suggest you the same. However, the big question everybody has is- should you be having your protein powders mixed with water or milk? Which is the better option for you? We tell you.

Focus on your goal

According to experts, the real difference between protein shakes mixed in water or milk lies in your own personal preference and the fitness goal you want to achieve- whether you want a bulked-up body, gain muscle mass or simply lose weight, flab and build on lean muscles.

When you want to build muscles and gain weight

When you have your protein shake with milk, it gives you an added source of natural protein and calcium which are very helpful when it comes to building muscles and gaining weight. It also works best when you have this drink right in the morning or before your workout since it is a slowly digestible drink and the body takes time to absorb the nutrients from it.

However, there is also a slight precaution to consider. The body is capable of absorbing only a limited capacity of protein in one go. Excess protein intake, in such cased, might as well go to waste so you should be paying attention to your drink and the numbers hiding in them.

When you want to lose weight

Snacking on protein sources is one of the best ways to induce satiety in the body and thus aid weight loss goals. Protein shake mixed with water is easier to digest. It also helps the body extract vital nutrients needed to recover faster post-workout and repair sore muscles.

Filling up on a protein shake mixed with water along with the right serving of fruits and veggies can be more nutritious and filling and help you fuel up your metabolism, thus making you lose fat faster too.

Verdict

While whey protein, in its entirety, is good for the body, if you are sensitive or suffer from a dairy allergy, having it with milk might not be the best option for you as it can cause much more problems later. On the other hand, having it with plain water may not suit everybody's taste. Knowing the fitness goal you have in mind will make you choose wisely.
