Kolar Gold Fields ( KGF )

Kolar Gold Fields is the 2 nd deepest mine on the earth having the depth of 3 KM.

 
 

It is believed that during the Chola dynasty. People used to dig gold from Kolar using their hands only.
 
On 2 nd February 1875, modern mining at KGF begin.
 
By 1902 , KGF produced more than 95% of India's gold.
 
1,70,000 kg of gold was extracted within 10 years. Entire gold explored from the kolar gold fields are exported to England. 
 
In 1920 area covered by kolar gold field was 30 sq. Miles with the population of 90,000 peoples.
 
After Japan , Kolar was the second city to have electricity in entire Asia. Electricity was supplied for the mining operations from India's first power generation plant which was called as "kaveri electric power plant " 
 
148 km long transmission lines ( longest in the world )  was supplied to the mining operations pulled by elephants and horses.
 
Even after India declared independence , KGF was still in the British hands.
 
In 1956 , the KGF was nationalised by the government of India. 

 
 

In 1960 , a laboratory had been set up at a depth of 8,000 feet in the gold mines for experiment on the protons after an article by homi jahangir bhaba.
 
World's first cosmic ray neutrino interaction took place at KGF in 1965.
 
The KGF was finally closed down on 28 th February 2001.
 
During these 121 years of mining , it is believed that 800 tones of gold ( 7,25,747 kg ) is extracted from Kolar Gold Fields.
