Sustainer homes: a home for life in every sense of the word

A SUSTAINABLE HOME BUILT TO YOUR INDIVIDUAL NEEDS AND SITUATION

We have become used to the idea of custom homes costing a fortune, and we’re also used to sustainability being an optional extra when it really ought be the standard. Now, Netherlands-based Sustainer Homes has developed a proven, revolutionary system to build your home according to your needs and situation. Sounds good? Take a look at some of their innovative projects...

DID YOU KNOW THAT ONE THIRD OF THE WORLD’S CO2 EMISSIONS COME FROM NEW BUILDINGS?

This doesn’t have to be the case, say the designers of Sustainer Homes. The choices we make today impact how our world will look 50 years from now

We don’t have to compromise to live sustainably. We just have to be serious about the choices we make. Sustainer Homes uses clever design and innovative technology to solve the problem of building sustainably for both you and the world.

Netherlands-based Sustainer Homes builds houses and offices based on an innovative wooden module that is easy to make and customise, but built to last. Whether you want an off-grid sustainable bungalow or holiday home, or a full size office in a repurposed warehouse, Sustainer Homes say they can make it happen without compromising the planet or your budget.

“BASICALLY, EVERY HOME BUILT THROUGH TRADITIONAL MEANS IS A MISSED OPPORTUNITY.“

— Gert van Vugt, CEO Sustainer Homes

HOW SUSTAINER HOMES BUILD SUSTAINABLE

The designers started by rethinking the way buildings are build with their specific end goal in mind: a truly sustainable construction —

*A building that stores rather than emits CO2
*A building that is sustainable to live and work in without compromising comfort, affordability or style
*A building that can last a lifetime

The company chose wood from Finnish pine trees as a starting point, as wood is both a storage of CO2 as well as a sturdy but flexible building block for construction. Through the process of lamination they get a layered piece of wood from which they can cut and mill any shape they want.

The shapes are automatically generated and optimised by an innovative design program so they lose as little material as possible, then cut by a computer-controlled milling machine. The pieces can then be assembled and constructed in a warehouse, shielded from frost or rain. When all is set and ready, the modules can be transported to their final location and the whole house can be put together like lego-pieces.

Sustainer Homes are currently only available in the Netherlands, and are geared towards the Dutch climate and comply with the Dutch building code.
