In a first, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) makes it to Top 10 global varsities ranking

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru has turned into the first Indian educational institution to make it to the top 10 of a global ranking for universities.

IISc has been positioned eighth in the Times Higher Education or THE Rankings, 2017 in the "best small universities"  category, joining the world class list that includes California Institute of Technology (Caltech) from the US, Ecole Normale Superieure from France and Pohang University of Science and Technology, South Korea.

Small universities are those with an understudy quality of under 5,000.

Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Prakash Javadekar has congratulated  IISc for the recognition.

"It is an uplifting news for us that one of our organizations has been positioned among the top 10 universities. This demonstrates our assurance to enhance nature of training at all levels and expanded concentrate on research and development," he said on sidelines of an occasion here.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings was established in 2004 by the UK-based Times Higher Education (THE) magazine. It gives the authoritative rundown of the world's  best universities, assessed crosswise over instructing, examine, worldwide standpoint, notoriety and that's just the beginning.

Regardless of the new high, India has two misses this year. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati, and Savitribai Phule Pune University, which were positioned 14 and 18 separately in the 2016 release, couldn't hold their spots in the main 20 this time.

IISc, a public university for logical research and advanced education, was set up in 1909 with dynamic support from Jamsetji Tata and Sir Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, the Maharaja of Mysore.

In 2015-16, it turned into the main Indian establishment to be positioned among the main 100 in THE World University Rankings for building and innovation at 99th position.
