FIFA U-17 World Cup final, Kolkata, England vs Spain, highlights: ENG thrash ESP 5-2, clinch maiden title

England have been crowed champions of the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup after they made a stunning comeback from two goals down to thrash Spain 5-2 in front of a capacity crowd in Kolkata. Sergio Gomez scored a brace in the first half an hour to hand the Spaniards a 2-0 lead, but England pulled one back through Rhian Brewster late in the first half. England were all over Spain in the second half, with Morgan Gibbs-White scoring the equaliser before Phil Foden gave them the lead. 22:07 hrs IST: Rhian Brewster wins the golden boot after top-scoring with eight goals for England. Brazil goalkeeper Gabriel Brazao is the golden glove winner while the golden ball is awarded to England’s Phil Foden.

20:31 hrs IST: GOAL! Stunning finish from Sergio Gomez. England give too much space to him and he stabs one in with full force. Spain are 2-0 ahead.

20:27 hrs IST: England have had more of the possession, but Spain are using their pace well on the counter.

20:20 hrs IST: Spain waste a gilt-edged opportunity to double their lead. Mohamed Moukhliss breaks away and has Cesar Gelabert beside him, but a heavy touch sees the England goalkeeper march forward and clear. Moukhliss does recover the ball as the clearance rebounds off an England player, but he passes to Gelabert who is in an offside position.

20:15 hrs IST: Spain have settled well into the game after a good start by England, who have enjoyed possession of 64% in the first 15 minutes.

20:10 hrs IST: GOAL! Sergio Gomez ghosts in and Spain are in the lead. A good finish from close range by the Barcelona starlet.

20:08 hrs IST: Tackles flying in early on, This could be a more physical game than expected.

20:02 hrs IST: Good start from England. Morgan Gibbs-White has a shot saved early on, shortly before Phil Foden’s shot is blocked.

19:45 hrs IST: Wishes have poured in for England from some of the country’s biggest footballing names.

19:30 hrs IST: Half an hour left for the big final. The iconic Yuva Bharati Krirangan had an attendance of over 56,000 for the third place play-off between Brazil and Mali. It is expected to have a capacity crowd of over 66,000 for the title clash.

19:10 hrs IST: England and Spain had faced each other in the final of the UEFA U-17 European Championship earlier this year. Spain had won the match in penalties. Will history repeat itself, or will England continue their prolific form and lift the title tonight?

 
 

Spain and England faced each other in the European U-17 final in Croatia in May and the Spaniards won 4-1 on penalties. Both the teams have played attacking football in this tournament and with 18 goals to their credit, no other team has scored more goals than England in the competition.

The final will also be a competition between the two most successful strikers of the FIFA U-17 World Cup – Abel Ruiz and Rhian Brewster. Brewster (7 goals) and Ruiz (6 goals) have both impressed with their finishing and they will surely play a big part in deciding the outcome of this encounter.
