Driverless trains may debut by month-end

NEW DELHI: In all likelihood, Delhiites will be able to travel by the driverless trains of Delhi Metro on the Magenta Line by the end of this month.

The 12.64 kilometre long Kalkaji Mandir - Botanical Garden section of Magenta Line is at pre sent being inspected for safety by the commissioner for metro rail safety (CMRS), which is expected to be over by November 15.
"After the green signal from CMRS, the date for opening the section for public will be decided," a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) official said.
This section will be Delhi Metro's first corridor to be operated using the communication based train control (CBTC) signalling technology which will facilitate movement of trains with a frequency of 90 to 100 seconds. While the trains can be operated on automated mode without a driver, for the time being, drivers will be present in the trains.
The Botanical Garden-Kalkaji Mandir section has nine stations. While Kalkaji Mandir station is underground, all other stations are elevated.
