Trolling Priyanka Chopra for visiting Rohingya camp is deplorable

NEW DELHI. Actor Priyanka Chopra on Monday visited Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh’s Cox's Bazar as a global UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Child Rights.

Highlighting the plight of Rohingya refugee kids, the 35-year-old actor posted photographs from her visit on social media.

However, instead of appreciating the actor for her humanitarian act, trolls decided to target her for the lamest reasons.

Troll Attack 1: Priyanka has double standards as she never visited Kashmiri Pandits

Why can’t Priyanka’s philanthropic gesture be appreciated without comparison? Why does it have to be clubbed with other causes? Why are Bollywood celebs made soft target and always
pressurized to raise other issues in addition to the causes they are already highlighting?

Every time an apolitical celeb voices support and concern for Rohingya refugees, the ‘where were you when’ brigade on social media jumps in and questions his/her supposed silence on the Kashmiri Pandits issue. The same doesn’t happen when celebs take a stand for Kashmiri Pandits.

Then nobody questions their silence on Rohingya refugees. Is it because of the religion of the victims? Have we now become a society where we will take up a cause depending on the religion?

As a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, Priyanka’s itinerary in all probability gets decided by the UN program. Had UNICEF asked Priyanka to visit Kashmiri Pandit camps, it is unlikely that the Bollywood star would have refused.

Also, when Priyanka speaks for the rights of Rohingya kids, she is, by extension, speaking for the rights of all the children suffering in refugee camps, be it in Jammu, Syria, Palestine etc.

There is no doubt that the Kashmiri Pandits have suffered tremendously since their exodus from the Kashmir valley. But Rohingyas certainly aren’t responsible for it.

Troll Attack 2: It is just a selfie stunt

Trolls claimed that it was just some publicity stunt by Priyanka, who visited the Rohingya camps for photo-ops.

Priyanka is not just one of the most powerful voices in the Hindi film industry, but arguably the biggest Indian star internationally. Hailing from a middle-class family in Jamshedpur, she has made a mark for herself across the world on the basis of sheer hard work, talent and intelligence. She has a massive fan-following on all social media platforms. The last thing she needs is publicity.

In fact, her presence brought tremendous joy to the kids in the camp, as can be clearly seen from the pictures she posted on Instagram.

Troll Attack 3: Concentrate on India

Some trolls asked her to get involved in such charitable events only in India instead of going to neighbouring nations. This is silly as humanity has no boundaries. Also as said earlier, she is an international artist associated with UNICEF, which works across nations.
