Royal baby: The CRUEL comment Prince Charles made at Harry’s christening that upset Diana

PRINCESS Diana was disheartened by a tactless joke that Prince Charles made about Prince Harry at his son’s christening, a royal biographer has claimed.

Diana felt her husband Prince Charles had ruined Harry’s special day by saying he was disappointed his son had not been born a girl, according to Angela Levin. She said: “Speaking to Andrew Morton in 1991 she [Diana] said: ‘Charles went to talk to my mother at Harry’s christening and said: “We were so disappointed - we thought it would be a girl.’ “Mummy snapped his head off, saying: ‘You should realise how lucky you are to have a child that’s normal.”

Henry Charles Albert David was believed to have been born a week early at 4.20pm on September 15, 1984.

Prince Charles called his mother the Queen on a specially installed phone in their private hospital room at the Lindo Wing at St Mary’s Hospital.

He then phoned Princess Diana’s father, Lord Spencer, at Althorn Estate, which was his home in Northamptonshire.

Writing in Harry: Conversations with the Prince, Ms Levin said Charles was so excited he ran through the front door and told anyone he said: “We have had a boy. Diana has had her second baby.

“She is very well and so is the baby. I’m so pleased, particularly for Prince William. He will be thrilled.”

Two hours after the birth Charles shook hands with well-wishers outside the hospital.

He said: “My wife is very well. The delivery couldn’t have been better.”

He also said Harry had “pale blue eyes and hair of an intermediate colour”.

Charles added the birth was a “marvellous experience”.

Diana was nervous about the new arrival as she worried Charles wanted a daughter.

But Prince Charles gave an interview on US television a couple of months later and called Harry “absolutely adorable”.

He said: “It’s interesting with a second child, very often - a lot of people have told me this - that with the second one you’re more relaxed as parents, I think, and therefore able to communicate an atmosphere of greater relaxation to the child.”

Prince Harry has now become a father himself after his wife Meghan Markle gave birth to Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor on May 6.
