Roger Federer praised by tennis stars after 100th title… but where are Nadal and Djokovic?

ROGER FEDERER won his 100th career title in Dubai, and tennis stars were quick to praise the Swiss star.

Federer beat Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4 6-4 in the final of the Dubai Tennis Championships to win the historic crown.

He is just the second male to have reached 100, but still sits nine behind Jimmy Connors.

Twenty of Federer’s titles have been Grand Slams, with long-term rivals Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic behind the 37-year-old.

Nadal has 17 Grand Slam wins while Djokovic has 15, though neither of them featured in Dubai this week.

Indeed, they currently occupy the top two spots in the tennis world rankings with Federer seventh.

But it’s the Swiss star who has tasted victory more recently, picking up his 100th title.

The likes of Kei Nishikori, Alexander Zverev, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Nick Kyrgios are among the stars to have congratulated Federer in a video posted by Tennis TV.

But there were notable absences with Novak Djokovic and Nadal not appearing.

Roger Federer himself was delighted to get his 100th title.

Federer said after beating Tsitsipas: "It’s great. To win my eighth here in combination with the 100th.

“It’s been a wonderful week for me.

"Difficult conditions throughout, tough opponents all the way through to Stefanos.

"What a great run he’s had.

"I don't know if Stefanos was born when I won my first title.

"It's a privilege [to play against possible future champions] because I'll be watching them on the TV.

"It was a treat to play Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi. I'm sure Stefanos will have a wonderful career.

"Tennis is in good hands regardless if I'm there or not."
