This Man Wants To Install Easy Rain Water Harvesting System Free Of Cost In Mumbai, Let

Mumbai has come to a virtual standstill because of the heavy downpour the city has been receiving and according to the MET department, the situation will persist, at least for the next few days. Two separate incidents of wall collapse claimed about two dozen lives, and a breach in the Tiware Dam in Maharashtra's Ratnagiri district on Tuesday, claimed six more lives and injured two dozen others.

Not even a week of rain, and Mumbai roads have turned into swimming pools. Twitter is brimming (pun intended) with the videos shared by stranded, frustrated and angry Mumbaikars.

One of the reasons Mumbai floods every year is because there is no conceptualized method of rain water harvesting. While Chennai is battling water crisis, Mumbai is flooded. But there are people who are taking steps to harvest all the rainwater now and save it for later.

A Facebook user Subhajit Mukherjee put up a post which reads:

We are looking for space of 4 feet by 4 feet in a school premises where we can do this rainwater harvesting. This will not just help in groundwater recharge but will also educate students of how to do it. All expenses will be borne by me. all we need is a letter from the school giving the permission.

We will involve all the students and make it together.

Purpose is to create low cost water harvesting units in every society connecting it to terrace water.

What we need is a big drum, pipes connecting terrace water to the drum, Pit as per the drum size. And stones around the drum for the water to penetrate in the soil.

The entire process takes 3 hours.

Filter net is used to keep solid waste away from the drum.

We can even take out water from the drum for usage like floor cleaning and car wash. This water can also be used for gardening purpose.

Applauding the cause, people quickly started sharing the post and it already has over a 1000 shares. The man has offered to bear all charges of installation and aims to not just install the system in schools, but teach students how to do it.

He also wrote that he is working on a video to make people understand the concept of the project better. He has explained how the method works, so if you want to install it in your house or building too, you can easily do it at a minimal cost.

Mumbai is receiving incessant rain. While it has disrupted the entire city, it is a good idea to save all that rain water for later. India as a country is facing a major water crisis; keeping that in mind, every drop counts.

This is a noble initiative by Subhajit and you can help him but letting him know of the schools in Mumbai which might be interested in his idea of rain water harvesting. His contact is in the Facebook post. Spread the word!
