India vs West Indies: None of us were even 10% of what Prithvi Shaw is when we were 18, 19, says Virat Kohli

HYDERABAD: Indian skipper Virat Kohli was all praise for the standout performance of Umesh Yadav after India defeated Windies by 10 wickets on Sunday.

Umesh was outstanding on the third day of the second Test. He claimed four for 45 and became the third Indian fast bowler to claim 10 wickets in a match on home soil after Kapil Dev and Javagal Srinath.

"With Shardul breaking down very early, for Umesh to bowl like that in both innings was a great effort," Kohli said after India won the series 2-0. "It showed the kind of fitness levels he has to keep running in and bowl 140 clicks throughout the game and pick wickets, more importantly. This was a standout performance in his career and something that he can build on. It's good to have so many guys bowling so well because anyone can step in at any time for anyone. That's a great luxury to have from the team's point of view," the Indian skipper said.

What makes Umesh click? "Not many people realise that he is a very, very talented bowler. He can bowl you unplayable deliveries every now and then which we experience in the nets all the time. He will just bowl a ball which you feel you couldn't have done anything else except getting out. Especially in Test cricket, he understands that he's bowling really well. It's a great sign to have four guys bowling so well and who can pick you wickets because that's something we want to keep as a consistent part of our team. Obviously the batting is something that, learning from the last tour, we want to improve on collectively but I think bowling is something that we need to keep as a major strength in order to feel that we have a chance to win series when we travel. I think these guys are taking responsibility well."

Young Prithvi Shaw was a big positive from this series, the skipper said. "The youngsters, we were looking at them playing with a lot of freedom, which they did. Prithvi was outstanding, Rishabh was really fearless. Areas that they need to work on, they will obviously be spoken to but I think overall, both those guys were really good. The conditions were not as challenging as they might get in future but in Test cricket, the first and the most important thing is confidence and understanding that you can score runs at the Test level,"

The Indian captain had more to say about Shaw. "It's great to have someone who can get you off to the kind of start you require, specially make a mark in first series that you play. From that point of view, it's great to have a guy who is so fearless. And he is not reckless, he is very confident about his game. You might feel that he will nick one now and then, but he hardly nicks the ball. That we saw in England as well. His batting in the nets, really attacking but in control. Rare control against the new ball is a great skill. None of us were even 10% of what he is when we were 18, 19. He has to build on that, but a guy coming and playing like that in his first series is a great sign for Indian cricket," he said.
