CBSE schools to help JEE-Advanced aspirants in Maharashtra gear up for online test

Move designed to address fears that rural students may face difficulties as test will be wholly computer-based.

With the Joint Entrance Examination-Advanced (JEE-Adv) set to be held for the first time using only computers instead of pen-paper, over 15,000 schools affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) have been asked to help the aspirants get familiar with computers.

The schools have been requested to make available their computer laboratories for JEE aspirants to attempt mock tests, a link to which is now available on the JEE-Advanced website. Two mock tests are available for aspirants, with the second test being released on Tuesday evening.

“Since this is the first year that JEE-Adv will be conducted in a fully computer-based test mode, we don’t want applicants to feel anxious about the same. Through this service, several students, especially from rural India, will get to understand the new format for the test and be at ease,” said a senior official from the examination conducting authority. CBSE affiliated schools as well as all Kendriya Vidyalayas across the country have been tapped for this purpose, added the official.

The move was introduced following concerns raised by experts that making the test completely computer-based would leave students from rural India anxious. “Many students have complained that the computer-based format will be completely new to them, therefore through this feature, everyone can get an idea of what to expect in the final test,” said the official.

While JEE-Main will be conducted in April in pen-paper format as well as computer-based mode, for the first time, JEE-Adv will be conducted exclusively in computer-based format on May 20 this year.

According to a circular released by the Joint Admission Board (JAB) in October 2017, the top 2.24 lakh aspirants who clear the JEE-Main exam will be eligible to appear for JEE-Adv this year, up by almost 4,000 compared to 2017. “The intake capacity of institutes has gone up so it was only fair to allow more students to vouch for these seats,” said the official.
